so does any one know how old the characters are supposed to be in the film?

Well let's make a few suggestions. I'll start:

Ray Peterson: 35
Carol Peterson: 36
Dave Peterson: 10

Art Weingartner: 36

Ricky Butler: 17

Mark Rumsfield: 63
Bonnie Rumsfield: 37

Walter Seznick: 85

Here are mine

Ray Peterson: 37
Carol Peterson: 36
Dave Peterson: 13

Art Weingartner: 40

Ricky Butler: 17

Mark Rumsfield: 61
Bonnie Rumsfield: 31

Walter Seznick: 82

well here is the thing, rumsfield says he was 18 months in the bush. is he talking about vietnam? if he was then the latest he might have been there was like what 1972? and from 1972 to 1989 is 17 years. so if he is in his 60's that means he was, what in his 40's in vietnam? is that even possible? i think that if we can nail his age down it will be easier to get everyone else. i think ray is in his early thirties and carol is a year younger then what ever he is. art is a few years older then them. bonnie is younger then carol by a few years. dave is 11 or 12. walter is in his 70's he seemed to have no problem picking up queenie!! i agree that rickie is 17. and his friend steve is 19.

I think he was more likely in WWII.

Well the vietnam war started in 1965. The movie plays in 1988/1989 so let's just say 24 years later. So Rummy could have been in his mid-30's. Considering that he maybe wasn't even fighting on the front but sitting behind some desk all the time, this could very well be, couldn't it?
