While watching “The Burbs” on Friday something came into my mind for the first time which may be a little flaw in the script but I’m not sure. Let me describe what I mean:
Towards the end of the movie when Art and Ray are in the Klopeks’ cellar the Klopeks return home (headlights on), find their cellar illuminated, turn off the headlights and drive backwards out of Mayfield Place.
In order to do what? Call the police!
Now the strange thing is, when Dr. Klopek is talking to Ray in the ambulance he says: “You looked into my furnace[…]You saw one of my skulls, didn’t you?”
Question: Assume that the house didn’t blow up. The police officer and the Klopeks would have surprised Ray and Art while they were snooping around in the basement. Wouldn’t it be likely that Ray and Art indeed found the skull of one of the Knapps? Wouldn’t they immediately tell the police officer that there’s a skull in the furnace? Even as a pathologist Werner Klopek would have problems explaining that.
So all I want to know is: wasn’t calling the police way too risky / imprudent?
