When Art spits out the bee, it disappears before it leaves the frame. It's been debated whether this was a special effect. It's a lot easier to see on DVD.

It always looked damn real to me.

Unfortunately I don't know more about this scene.

I wish they make a special DVD version one day with an audio commentary from Joe Dante where he explains things like that.

It does indeed look real, but when he spits it out it just disappears. I concur and vote for a digital bee.

Foaming squirrels, however, are another issue.

Mayfield 669 you're right. On video it was harder to spot, but DVD makes it obvious.

There are quite a few differences on the DVD. One is the obvious change from a model of the neighborhood to an actual aerial view in the opening scene and, of course, the addition of the alternative ending. I bought an LCD HD tv a month ago and I am sorry to confess that I have sinned and not watched the Burbs on it yet, although I have watched the Burbs on the TV in the bedroom when the wife was watching something else. She won't let me watch the Burbs on HD until I resemble the man she married.

When you first see the bee on arts mouth, you can see its legs moving like its trying to get away. I say it was real.

"Nice effect....is it real? No, it left with the frame...."

Digital effect in 1988, especially for such a minute scene? Not likely, I say. I doubt it was actually a bee however....more likely a harmless bee-esque like insect...

I agree. A real bee would have stung him. It was probably A winged beatle. But A real one.
