One thing I'm interested in: can you name some US or UK words which have been directly adopted from the German language.

I know, there are words like "Kindergarten", "Angst", "Rucksack" and so on.

Can you list some more?
 
Kaput is sometimes used. I just like the word. It is one of those that seems to convey its meaning by the sound. There are many similar words since they belong to the same Sprachraum(?). Zeitgeist is sometimes used as well but you and Art have hit, I think, most of the common ones, although a few more will likely occur to me the second I log off.

- Weltanschauung

- Blitzkrieg

- Schadenfreude

- Poltergeist

- Oktoberfest
 
Well, there you go. Blitzkrieg and Poltergeist are widely used. In American football, when you rush the quarterback with other than your defensive linemen, it is called a Blitz. And of course, Oktoberfest.
