I suspect it is the former. His Dad/Uncle, being a doctor should have taught him better. This brings up another point - what is the relationship there? Is Hans Werner's son or Reuben's son or just some kinda mad doctor apprentice that they picked up off the street?

Thoughts? or did I miss something in the 200 times I watched the movie?
 
Interesting. But no resolution that I saw??? I don't think Reub would be much of a hit with the ladies. Werner could at least seem to be presentable enough to have been married.
 
Hmmmm yeah we've touched on Hans (making him flinch) but good call on why flies are heard buzzing round him...is it a hygeine issue? The dirty scruffy ginger Pinnochio....
