Ah, my Arrow Blu Ray finally arrived and I've just seen "There goes the neighbourhood", a 67 minute long feature in which e.g. Corey Feldman, Joe Dante, Courtney Gains and Wendy Schaal are being interviewed about their experiences with shooting The Burbs back in the summer of '88.

In this feature Joe Dante mentions that Tom Hanks was supposed to act as if he lost his job but wanted to keep it secret in front of everyone else (in my opinion this also explains this look of guilt on his face when Art asks him at the beginning why he's not at work and Ray replies he took a week off).

I then watched "A tale of two Burbs" in which the thatrical cut and the workprint version are being compared. This features a few cool scenes we have never seen before. There is also a much longer dream sequence in which Ray's boss appears and asks Ray to come into his office.

Then, there's the workprint version of the alternate ending and in the final scene when all is said and done and Ray and Carol are walking down the wet street into their house Ray finally admits that he lost his job and Carol replies that she knew it from the look on his face when he came home Friday evening.

God, I love it that we are still learning new things about this movie.

Oh wow, that's interesting.

Remember Carol said:
"It's your vacation"...

And Ray mentioned his vacation clothes too... Interesting.

Anyway, he's onto something. Not working full time, spending a lot of time drinking beers, pruning the garden, watching the neighborhood and the weather change in our very own homes, in our very own burbs...is SERIOUSLY * THE * LIFE *!

Good times!

That's excellent indeed, can you tell me more about the other new scenes ? Got the bluray but i don't have a bluRay Peterson player yet.

This is great. I really have to find a way to be able to watch blu-rays.

Isn't there some software which allows you to maybe watch it on your PC because it cracks the Region Code? Something like "DVD43" for example...

Sure, I'll make a list but I will also try not to spoiler too much here. However, do not read if you want to be completely surprised by this.

1.) BBQ SCENE

Completely deleted in the theatrical cut but in the workprint the scene follows the scene in which Art and Ray were hunted by the bees.

2.) JEOPARDY

In the theatrical cut Ray and Carol are watching Jeopardy while Art comes closer wanting to talk to Ray. In the workprint however, Ray is sitting on the stairs (also munching Freakies) while Carol is occupied with her notebook. Ray says that Art mentioned the Klopeks have bars in front of their windows because they want to turn it into a dungeon and repeats that Art believes they are evil incarnate. We already see a very suspicious Ray here and Carol just says things like "You're too smart to fall for that".

3.) GARBAGE MEN

This scene is longer with a little more dialogue between the two garbage men plus a longer scene in which Art is examining the garbage. I personally liked it a lot more since there is a scene in which Art says "It's the last can", opens it, his eyes become wider and wider and he just says "It's..it's not here."

4.) ENTERING WALTER'S HOUSE

This scene was completely re-shot for the theatrical cut. In the workprint they are standing in Walter's backyard and Rumsfield climbs a ladder and enters the house alone. He also comes out alone but also finds the rug and assumes Walter must have left the house in a big hurry.

5. NIGHTMARE SEQUENCE

Much much longer in the workprint version also featuring Ray's boss and Mark and Bonnie dressed up as the hooded figures. The hooded figures also appear in the living room. It's really much more "nightmarish" in general.

6.) DIGGING

Completely cut out in the theatrical version but in the workprint we see Art and Ray arriving in the Klopek's backyard before they start digging.

7.) RICKY'S FRIENDS ARRIVE

In the workprint we can see Ricky's friends arrive. We also see Rumsfield on the roof, observing the neighbourhood. Being the man he is, he applies a lot of sunlotion on his nose.

8.) NO BEER

This one had me laughing out extremely loud. When Art and Ray break into the Klopek's house in the workprint cut they look around the kitchen. Art looks into the fridge, closes it in complete shock, looking freaked out. Ray says "What's it?" and Art replies "There's no beer".

9.) ALTERNATE ENDING

The original ending was completely re-shot after test screenings. The workprint contains the original ending featuring a lot of different scenes also including the mentioned confession of Ray that he lost his job. However it of course ends with the famous "God I love this street" line but this time followed by the theme of "Mr. Rogers neighbourhood".

Thanks for the detailed infos !
Can't wait to watch these scenes.
I've heard that Joe Dante also talks about some scenes
that were missing and not filmed.

There is also the option to watch the feature "A tale of two "Burbs" with the audio commentary of Joe Dante which I haven't done yet. Will let you know what he talks about.

Plus we might get some interesting information from the screenwriter Dana Olsen who gives a commentary during the normal film.

Wasn't the fact that Ray got fired already a well known fact? I remember Joe Dante talking about in in a few interviews.

It never occured to me that he got fired. I just accepted the fact that he took a week off, and didn't pick up the subtle hints?
