I was listening to a movie podcast that mentioned this quote from Roger Ebert - even though it was aimed at movie franchises, I did think about 'Burbs fandom:

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1192222-a-lot-of-fans-are-basically-fans-of-fandom-itself

"... Extreme fandom may serve as a security blanket for the socially inept, who use its extreme structure as a substitute for social skills ..."

Come on Roger, just because I fell asleep to my 'Burbs VHS tape every night doesn't mean it's my security blanket!

"If you know absolutely all the trivia about your cubbyhole of pop culture, it saves you from having to know anything about anything else. That's why it's excruciatingly boring to talk to such people: They're always asking you questions they know the answer to.”

Quoted above from that Roger Egghead ;)

He probably couldn't be more wrong even if he tried, and if I tried explaining to him why he is wrong, he probably wouldn't listen, these are the kind of people (like him) that are truly boring, he doesn't "get it", he doesn't get that it's just a lil thing that brings people together, some familiarity that gives people some common ground, it's not always about the fandom itself, but the actual social aspect of hanging out with someone and having some common ground.

Many of us in here are everything from 3D artists, writers, builders, and all walks of life, teachers even - I mean, take me - I've been everything from a school teacher (which demands that you're social to begin with), to now (An international IT manager for several countries) etc... and thats just me, I know for a fact that we have all kinds of social and creative people in here that keep returning just because "the burbs" is our little "kink" or "getaway" that we have in common, it's just a little silly fun that will kinda never die. And a lot of us are fans of the director Joe Dante and his style of "movie making/direction".

He’s an egghead and I don’t think you should make fun of him.
