So, am I the only one who thinks The 'Burbs could be easily genre-bent into a Southern Gothic piece? I've come to realize that as well as having a lot in common with Victorian literature, it also has (maybe even more) stuff in common with the Southern Gothic genre...dysfunctional families, darkness in the heart of society, etc. etc.

What do you all think?

I agree. Don't you also (partially) write your studies about this topic?

I focused on English Victorian literature, but now that I've gotten my undergrad, I've been trying to get more well-versed in American lit, which has led me to the Southern Gothic genre. I did write a paper on how Wuthering Heights may have inspired The 'Burbs in my last semester of my undergrad, though. I made an A. :)

Did the person who graded that paper know about The Burbs, or were they totally confused?

She hadn't seen it, but I described it to her, and it's on Netflix here, so it's possible she watched it, but I can't say for sure.

I've never read Wuthering Heights. I might have to now to see if I spot the similarities...or the inspirations.

I really love that you write serious stuff about Burbs related things. When I think of The Burbs now, the backstory you wrote about the lives of the Klopeks is always in my mind. It's like you implanted a prequel into my mind...
