I guess the script ending and the Barkelow kid character disappeared together, as they're linked, the Barkelow kid's purpose was to add a constant pressure on the characters as he was riding his squeaky bicycle endlessly and only stopped when big events occured.
Besides after the ambulance is leaving, the last scene of the movie
was supposed to be the Barkelow kid.

Fun review.
