A little background about myself.
Yes, I've been a member of this forum for quite a while, and away for even more, but never forgot it - I do lurk here from time to time.
But something you may not know about me (or a lot of us around in the vast lands of the internet) is that a lot of us is dreaming of the days when you can in fact produce entire movies from your own home, maybe with just a few fans, but closer to realism, closer to our dreams and fantasies.
We're getting there!
Graphics cards are getting more powerful than ever, synths are getting to a level where you virtually can create a limitless orchestra by the tips of your fingers.
And motion capture techniques are now so close that we have suits and software that lay in the realm of the individual, instead of the studios, so it's coming closer and closer...
...can you feel it too?
I've built up my little home studio for over 20 years, I'm just a regular worker like most of you, just fans of something we love - that we never ever let go of, and dreaming of the big day where it happens. The day when you have the possibility of recreating the universe YOU want to live in, and present it (and/or with) to your friends.
The power we have with home computers today is borderline insane. We can literally toss millions of polygons around in realtime with real world lights just like in a studio. Motion capture is now so powerful it can happen real time as you act it out, no need for 1800+ computers in a huge render hall (talking to you Pixar) to make it real, it can be done right here right now.
And it's only going to be better.
There's not a day that goes by, where I don't think about it, or research every possibility of this, and I've waited long to post something like this to you, to say - it's gonna happen! Might not be today, might not be tomorrow, but we're no longer years away from it, it can happen now - if you WANT it bad enough.
But can one guy still do it alone? I don't think so, because one person can't be it all, think of it all, or do it all. Yes, we're there were we can make a short, let's say 30 second demo with maybe one or two characters with realistic rendering. But a movie needs much more, it needs more character actors, it need more voiceovers, it need background artists, and much more - but much MUCH less than say a crew of 1000 - it can be narrowed down to say 10 or less to make it real, but it demands real dedication and effort.
I have a TON of equipment, probably for around 30-40K$ or more, the price of a new car, so it's not bad, and it's fully doable. But the project is daunting to do alone.
The reason I'm writing this, is because with all this equipment, I've come to realize we're finally there - where it IS possible to do something like this, in the forseeable future.
One day, I hope to meet enough "fans" that also have equipment (doesn't have to have it all), but enough to contribute SOMETHING, and maybe we will meet at an "the burbs" viewing or something, have a few hundred beers and fix the barbecue, I know we can do that much
And who knows, maybe one day, we'll get to know each other (you know who you are, talented, dreamer, with a bunch of cool stuff you never get to utilize because it's too daunting to complete alone), but you can do SOMETHING, whether it's the musical scores, acting for the motion capture, writing the script (this isn't something you type during 1.5 hours, needs lots of love). Remember - if you want a crew of 10 to waste years of their life on something you typed in 2 hours, that ain't gonna crack it, so put some love into it, a lot of it.
Well I'm not promising anything, this is just me airing my thoughts a little.
