what were the kopecks guilty of?

i need to ask,,, i still cant figure out what-he kopecks were. Were they occultists? Were they experimenting on people? Were they cannibals? Also who wrote the screenplay?
 
Dana Olson wrote the screenplay (he also has a small cameo as a cop at the end of the movie).

I guess the Klopeks were simply guilty of being serial killers in the end. Dr. Klopek might have also been experimenting on people but when Art and Ray were in the cellar there were no torture devices or something like that, just the furnace.

So I guess it's "just" murdering people and burning them.
 
how did dana olsen come up with this idea. Is this person still with us? Has a squeal ever been considered? This movie is epic. I'm sorry not more recognize its genius.
 
I once read that Dana Olsen came up with the idea based on his experiences with his own neighbours when he was younger. He had some neighbours in the street who were never seen and they never took care of their lawn. That's the origin of the Burbs script.
