A few years ago I watched High Tension (Haut Tension) and I recently decided to explore more of the "new wave" of French horror films.

"Inside" was one of the more notable movies in the sub-genre so I checked it out (it's not for the squeemish!).

Anyway, the main characters house # is 666 but it is done in a much more subtle way than Burbs. I don't think it ever gave the main character's last name, but perhaps it was Knapp.

Imdb only names her "La femme". How unfortunate for the Knapps.

Other shocking movies from France are

- Martyrs
- Irreversible

Have you already seen them as well?

Marytrs was part of my tour de French horror. Yeesh.

I've heard of Irreversible but have not seen it. My exploration of French horror was kind of exhausting for a 2 day period so I decided to move on. Is it worth checking out? I can't quite say I enjoyed Martyrs or Inside but watching them was certainly an experience.

One French film that I thought was excellent and very effective was Them. Have you seen it?

No, I haven't seen "Them" and never heard of it. But if you recommend it, I will check it out.

Irreversible...from an artist point of view I liked it as the story unfolds on a reverse-chronological base. So it starts with the end and then slowly takes you back to the beginning. Plus, it's a movie which manages to convey a message.

But then there are those two scene which made it infamous. The scene in which the guy gets his head smacked to pieces with a fire extinguisher (no his name wasn't Klopek) and a violent rape scene which seems to last forever. In my opinion these scenes are not necessary. Maybe there also was some sense and some message behind it but in my opinion they were implemented for the sake of violence alone. Nonetheless, I'd recommend the movie in general.

Them has kind of a lame title - but it's an attempt to rename a French film, so... And despite lacking any substantial gore, sex, or language, it's rated R - I'm guessing due to intensity. It's a very simple movie with just a few characters. My guess is that if you liked the other films mentioned, you'd enjoy this. It doesn't have much in common with those other films other than being French, though.

I'll give Irreversible a shot at some point.

Have you seen Takashi Miike's Audition? I watched that a few years ago and I found it pretty similar to something like Martyrs. I haven't seen other Miike movies and I'm not sure I want to.

This genre of horror films are pretty challenging. They aren't easy to watch. They really aren't enjoyable. And they're psychologically draining. It's definitely a different scary movie experience from something like Drag Me to Hell.

Talking about the intensity of a movie...Do you know Funny Games (1997)? I guess it was remade in 2007 for the US by the same director. Much of the violence and terror only happens in your head and not on screen. Still there are better movies but in my opinion it was quite alright.

No, I have not seen a single Miike film yet. Some people said they watched "Ichi the Killer" and it sucked. Usually this Asian horror cinema tends to be a little too bizarre for my taste. The Asian directors always take it to the limit. Some of the sickest stuff comes from Asia. I mean "Guinea Pig 2: Flowers of Flesh and Blood" was sick. In a negative and not entertaining way. "Men behind the sun" was also very depressing and sick. I don't really need this stuff.

Give me something like "The Exorcist" or "The Descent" and I'm happy with it.
