Possible Criticisms?

I saw this thread and thought it said "Possible Christmas" and expected DemonPrincess to have written a short story set on Mayfield Place at Christmas.. Now I'm disappointed!

Christmas? Please. That's WAY too happy a holiday for me to touch. :P

This may sound a bit cheesy but I really love all the perfect imperfections in this movie. If you examin it closely I'm sure you'll find things that could have been "better". But all in all, IMO, this movie is perfection.

I'm pretty confident in your ability to make even the happiest holiday dark and disturbing :)

Maybe if things in The Burbs didn't come to a head quite so fast, and all the neighbours' suspicions lingered for much longer, the plot of the film could have taken place the week of Christmas...

Kind of like The Burbs meets Gremlins!

I love The 'Burbs and have only one criticism. Some of the characters live in houses that are way too big. Art's house is huge. Why does he have such a huge house? He must not have kids since they're not around while he's investigating the Klopeks. And at the end they shout, "Your wife is home!" not "Your wife and kids are home." Look at his house in the picture below. How many rooms is that? For just two people?

Even more strange is Ricky Butler's massive house, shown in the bottom picture. It seems to be just Ricky living in a place big enough to house multiple families. He doesn't seem to have a job considering how much free time he has to instigate with his neighbors. How can he afford it? And why would he want such a big place?

I believe Ricky is not living there alone but still with his parents who are not there (maybe on vacation). Ricky might be a college kind during summer break. Although I have to admit I'm not quite sure why I belive this as there might be no direct hints to his parents in the movie.

Regarding Art it's indeed strange. MAYBE they do have a kid (or even more kids) but it's strange they are not shown in the movie. A hint I once discovered is the tire swing which is hanging in Art's garden and can occassionally be seen. I'm pretty sure it's not Art who is using this.

Yeah, Ricky lives with his parents.

Even if Ricky lives with his parents, that's only three people... in a house that could probably comfortably hold three parents-and-a-kid families! A huge amount of unnecessary space/rooms/floors!

Welcome to America! Home of the Big Mac and individually wrapped everything. Seriously though, those houses are of typical size for many suburbs built through the 1980's. You can still get new homes that big, but the land around them has shrunk down to a small strip of space now with barely any yard space.
