Yeah well, they're not exactly innocent in the alternate ending. Dr. Klopek attacked Ray in the Ambulance and the investigator said that, Klopek said, that if they dug deep enough they'd find the dead body.

I don't think the Klopeks were supposed to be good guys in any endings, filmed or on paper.
