The "Do you believe in..." - thread

do you believe love is forever?
as in, 2 people fall in love and spend the rest of their lives together, happy and grateful to be with their true love.

Quite frankly: no. I have the unromantic perception that love is more or less just an illusion. A trick that our mind is playing with us. Imagine the perfect girl you've always dreamed about and wow, what a coincidence that you finally met her. You're so glad to have met her.

But the truth is, somewhere in...Brazil, Norway or Italy there is another girl just like her. Or even better. And if you had met her before probably you two would be together now, going on believing how lucky you are to have met her during your stay in Brazil, Norway, Italy or wherever.

I believe in love as a temporary emotion, but endless love...hm, no, I can't imagine that.

Most of us WISH and DREAM about it though (just take a look at all the movies), if we don't have dreams...something to shoot for...we have nothing.

Me? I've been in love a few times, you know....really in love, I can count the times on my fingers even though I'm hardly 20 anymore. 3 Times, tops.

The older I get, the more cynical I get too, I like it on my own, sometimes I wish for that wife next to me (Kind of like Carrie Fisher in the Burbs, you know...faithful caring wife that has a sense of reality when the rest of us is just a bunch of kids) ;)

But when I see how many problems todays kids having, and their parents...constantly divorcing, huge divorce settlements, unhappy kids in split homes...it's kind of a turnoff.

Guess me and JoOngle are the only ones who are interested in posting here anymore?

Yeah, it's interesting to see (as I'm getting older, too) how the kind of woman someone fancies changes over the years. Those guys I went to school with they all used to be keen on those woman with an obviously beautiful outward appearance. Wasp waist, huge bust size, pretty face, that was important. But as they got older and indeed were looking for someone to spend their lives with (probably even raising children together) they chose partners which were the total opposite to the kind of women they were after when they were in their early 20's. Because these women had other qualities (just what JoOngle said: faithful, caring). Many of the are married now to women who are just like Carol Peterson.

So you almost have to pity beautiful women :)

Yesterday there was a German comedian on TV who was also talking about love. And he said something like:

"You have to differ between the romantics and the realists. The romantics say: 'For everyone there is exactly the one life partner who fits you perfectly to share the rest of your life with.' while the realist says: 'If someone takes the wrong one, the plan for all the other ones doesn't come together'"

I also had to chuckle at this one:

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach but what happens to the love after the man has digested?

I think love is the same as everything else in life, it requires upkeep and maintenance, and you will maintain it according to how loyal and faithful a person you are.

If you work on it then i believe that love can last a lifetime. But i don't believe that you can go on autopilot and make the love last...

I awoke on impact
Under surveillance from the camera eye
Searching high and low
The criminal mind found at the scene of the crime
Handcuffed and blind, I didn't do it
She said she loved me
I guess I never knew
But do we ever, ever really know?
She said she'd meet me on the other side
But I knew right then, I'd never find her

I don't believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don't believe in love
Its never worth the pain that you feel

No more nightmares, Ive seen them all
From the day I was born, they've haunted my every move
Every open hands there to push and shove
No time for love it doesnt't't matter
She made a difference
I guess she had a way
Of making every night seem bright as day
Now I walk in shadows, never see the light
She must have lied cause she never said goodbye

I don't believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don't believe in love
Ill just pretend she never was real
I don't believe in lovev I need to forget her face, I see it still
I don't believe in love
Its never worth the pain that you feel

No chance for contact
There's no raison detre
My only hope is one day I'll forget
The pain of knowing what can never be
With or without love it's all the same to me

I don't believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don't believe in love
Ill just pretend she never was real
I don't believe in love
I need to forget her face, I see it still
I don't believe in love
Its never worth the pain that you feel

A little more light-hearted apporach to the subject by Michael Peterson:

Everybody's wavin' good-bye to Joe
His wife called, last call...he's gotta go
Kinda brings a tear, to every single guy
I admire his dedication, he's a family man
Thirteen years had a ring on his hand
Kinda makes me wonder, if I should give it a try

Well I would if I could, but I can't so I won't
They're sayin' I do, I'm sayin' I don't
I won't regret it, one single minute
'Cause love's great when you're not in it

No curtains on the windows, just a couple sheets
TV dinners, my life is complete
Ain't no one more committed...I love the single life
If I want to, I can put on my cleanest dirty shirt
Stay out all night for better or worse
Just look what I'd be missin', if I had a wife

Well I would if I could, but I can't so I won't
They're sayin' I do, I'm sayin' I don't
I won't regret it, one single minute
'Cause love's great when you're not in it

Well I would if I could, but I can't so I won't
They're sayin' I do, I'm sayin' I don't
I won't regret it, one single minute
'Cause love's great when you're not in it

I would if I could, but I can't so I won't
They're sayin' I do, I'm sayin' I don't
I won't regret it, one single minute
'Cause love's great when you're not in it

I don't know if you guys made those poems on your own, if you did - Awesome, if you just quoted someone else, oh well...

I'm making my own, right now - right here on the forum, so prepare (I've had a few brewskis) poems coming on...

I sometimes think about a loved one
sometimes I think about the time gone.
The street that in my life
follows the beat in my hive.
To be seen or not...

My neighborhood, is kind of special
that's why I moved here, to my soul heal...
It's not your average hood
It's not by everyone understood...
but it's mine.

God, I love this street...
When I dip my toes into the sea, I can feel my feet.
Sometimes I can feel the mood of the hood,
Sometimes I can't feel if it's bad or good...
But by god, I love this street.

This may not be the average burbs...
but by golly, it's my local suburbs...
it may not be fancy,
it may not be as described by Tom Clancy...
But, this is MY neighborhood!

If Joe Dante...
Upped the Ante...
He surely would
Appreciate this neighborhood...

This is my hood...
boys in the wood...
Like no one other could...
My neighborhood!

God I love this street!
