I always saw the rainbow patch as some kind of 80's symbol of "healing, alternative lifestyle, veganism, thinking-about-the-world" sort of thing.
It's like those "alternative healing hippie" kind of people you'd see in alternative malls or special antique stores that sells candles, healing crystals and knick-nacks, trinkets you'd never use but lonely ladies seem to like to collect and make their homes "cozy" with all kinds of weird stuff that only has meaning to them.
