I got to thinking...there could be another angle on this.

The Burbs II: Next Generation
Same street. Ricky and Dave have grown up and stay on Mayfield. Art and Suzette had a kid, also now grown up.

Hans, long since released and rehabilitated, has broken away from his family and with his keyworker has made contact with the residents of Mayfield Place. In his mitigation, the court heard how, from a baby, Hans had been internalized into the 'norms' of the Klopeks' behaviour. He lived a solitary existence unaware of life outside the home. All of his social conditioning was done via the patriarchal close family unit. He was granted clemency in court, but he had a psychiatric report and was ordered to access rehabilition and reform programmes and be supervised for 5 years to monitor progress.

Eventually, he gets a glowing report, makes contact with the residents of Mayfield, and says he wants to make reparation. He gets on so well that he even buys a property on the street and is the model neighbour.........
But all is not what it seems.

Hanks, Fisher, Duccomun, Dern etc...could make appearances.

The original Cape Fear had Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum in the main roles. When it was remade with Robert De Niro years later, Greg Peck and Bob Mitchum made appearances in it.

It could work. Get some new cool animals too.

As much as I love this movie, I honestly feel it doesn't need a sequel. No offense, Art ;)

And I was just remarking to RaysYard how unnecessary it would be not to make a sequel.

I like the fact that your storyline pays tribute to another Hollywood movie (Cape Fear) just as The Burbs kind of paid tribute to Rear Window. It's a good idea to get a link like that.

So we have a basic storyline, in another thread we already discussed about the new actors, now all we need is someone to write the script, slip it under Universal's door and El-Snappo we'll get our sequel.

In the recent years prequels came into fashion. I'm not convinced that a prequel could work in the case of The Burbs. What do the others think?

If we are limited to the characters we know and love ... then I think there would need to be a Klopek-like stimulus to spark some drama at Mayfield Place. The film definitely needs to have some people or event that counters the ideal quiet suburban setting.

Of course, if we are allowed to go further back in time, there's always the story of Skip!

Yeah...what do you think...been awful quiet...maybe we could have a little participation.

Ya know, I would like to see a movie based on Skip. That would be interesting. The way Art was telling that story even made it worthy of becoming a movie.

Maybe there's a chance for a "triumvirate of evil":

- Hans returns as in Art's storyline

- Skip's son, mentally mad from what his father did long ago, learns about Hans return, willing to assist him in taking revenge on Mayfield Place

- And then there's a family member of the Barkelows. We never saw him but he was there back in 1989, the fourth man behind the Klopek murders.

OK, maybe a little too farfetched but it's a concept.
