Instantly reminded me of Hal Needham, the director of the two "Cannonball Run" movies.

How funny you mention Cannonball Run, I watched some of that movie being filmed when I was young. I got to see a bunch of cool cars at the Hotel being used in the film. Hal Needham put on a little side show of his driving skills, it was awesome.

Now THAT's cool! And again you see, what a small world this is. I mention one of my favorite childhood movies and another board member is able to tell me he has watched Hal Needham showing some driving skills while the movie was shot. Well, since in the first place he was a stuntman (and not a director) he must have had some driving skills.

Did you see some actors as well?

Oh yea, we saw most of the main actors, Burt Reynolds, Terry Bradshaw, Roger Moore, Dom Deluise. I don't remember Peter Fonda but I didn't know who he was at the time either.
Speaking of Burt Reynolds, Smokey and the Bandit was also filmed in our area and I saw a small part of that filming as well. They just opened a Smokey and the Bandit themed bar called Southside Steve's in McDonough, Ga just a few miles from my house and we are going down Saturday night to party some. One of our local radio DJ's (Southside Steve) from Rock 100.5 opened it. Check it out if the link works.

Link works. But there are only few infos on that page. To which extent is this Smokey themed? Are there photos on the wall? Do they have some memorabilia of the movie there?

The Smokey movies were also shot by Needham. Is there a reason why he prefered the Georgia area so much?

I haven't been in the bar yet but I hear there is a lot of pictures and some memorabilia. One side of the bar is Texas (you buy Coor's beer on that side) and the other is Georgia.
I heard the reason they filmed here a lot was the Governor of Georgia gave reduced taxes for filming and at the time Burt Reynolds lived in Georgia.
