Anyone remember the first time you saw the Burbs and what you thought? I don't remember the date or situation exactly, but I bought a VHS tape (in the bargain bin at Target for $5 - best $5 I ever spent) and watched it because a guy at work had told me about it and how funny it was. I asked him about it a few years ago and he didn't remember watching it. I thought that was odd. I remember thinking it was a great movie.

Well here's my story:

I've been sporadically watching The Burbs whenever it came on TV but somehow only parts of it, never the full movie.

In 2004 I taped it from TV and finally watched it from the first to the last minute, realizing how great it was.

I recommended it to a friend of mine and lend him my tape. After he recorded another movie on my Burbs tape by mistake he bought me an original VHS tape.

And The Burbs became my summer movie of 2004. I fell in love with it since the summer of 2004 was kind of a hard one. Many difficult tests at the university, lots of trouble at work. Well, lots of stress and strain.

The Burbs managed to calm me down a little and made me smile again. Somehow it was reducing the pressure. And I decided to take things easier in order to prevent a burnout one day. I guess I succeeded. So I owe The Burbs something. :)

That's right. You don't want to end up like Art (not our Art), burnt out, mooching from Ray and Carol and spying on the Petersons.

Amazingly enough, I actually saw this at the theater. I was only 12 at the time and the thing that I remember thinking was the funniest was Ricky talking about how he called the "pizza dude." Hey, I was 12.

Interestingly it was Art's carefree and laid-back attitude I tried to adopt.

 :)

You know, sometimes that might be the best way to survive, rather than stressing out.

Exactly! If you're able to be that type of person, you'll live longer I'm sure. Less stress/anxiety/tension etc.
To return to the question. I remember watching this movie one saturday night on TV. My wife asleep on the sofa, I was guzzlling beers...then I watched from the first scene to the last and remember being mind blown I thought...this wasn't a film that would appeal to everyone - and that was cool...because it appealed to me and I hoped a select few, not the masses. Then I bought it and watched it all the time. But yes, that first night's screening was superb! I remember thinking...THAT'S ME!!!!!!!!!

So Art will definitely outlive Mark and especially Ray, notice how Ray's outlet for stress is to crush beer cans.

Guzzling beers is a fine pasttime while watching the Burbs. My goal is a couple hundred but I think the most I have been able to do is three.

You are right - most people don't get the Burbs, but that's perfectly fine with me. My humor is often unappreciated by the masses (I am sort of the Vincent Van Gogh of 21st century jokes - a genius before my time)(hopefully)..

By the way, I am going on a two week trip starting tomorrow and won't be able to get back to the board (after maybe early tomorrow morning) so y'all have a great time with the Board.

Have fun at the trip.

Did you already call the Delvaneys?

i think it was around 2002 / 2003 -
my parents were watching it on the norwegian TV3, and i just sauntered into the livingroom and my dad said "hey, come see this movie. it's good." he had seen it before i think. so i sat down and watched, and i was amazed. then a few years later, TV3 had this thing were you could vote for the movie they'd be showing at the coming friday. and they had 4 different movies. (one was called "the last supper" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113613/ - which i saw a few years later and it was very good actually.

ANYWAY, so i was hoping so much that someone would vote for The Burbs, and that friday they showed the votes and announced the "winner" - and no kidding, but the burbs won wit like 80 percent of the votes. i recorded it on a vhs. :D
(and later, chris sent me a vhs all the way from the uk and to me, with some chocolate aswell!)

- then i bought the dvd a couple of years ago.
