I think that films such as Gremlins appeal to anybody whereas The 'Burbs appeals more to those people who live out in the suburbs. Those who don't maybe don't get some of the humour, because it's so subtle.
It's a similar fate as seen by Office Space - a box office failure but has since grown a cult following. Working in an office I can see the humour in that too.
On the other hand, we could all simply be psychos. mg:

I like how the reviewer mentioned at the beginning, "Before Tom Hanks grew a little overweight, lost his sense of humour and started doing "worthy" films"
It's always saddened me how comedy actors go serious, because they want awards and be all serious.
