I have to agree with Michael on this one. Anyone who works for a corpation know's what BS the HR groups are. Also all the stupid corporate policies are to make you feel like...well...another brick in the wall.

One of my colleagues (aged 27) lost her mom last year. Her mom died on the Saturday unexpectedly.
My colleague rang HR and said her mom had died and she needed time off. Their robotic response was this "You're allowed 3 days - one of which is for the funeral"
My colleague said "...my mother has died, could you show some compassion?" "We aren't here to be compassionate - we're here to dictate policy" Not so much as a 'oh I'm sorry' etc. My colleague slammed the phone down.
Just to give you an idea of what it's like working for the government in England.

All in all, you're just another brick in the wall.
We don't need no education, we don't need no thought control.
Hey Art, did they really say ""We aren't here to be compassionate - we're here to dictate policy"? This is perverted concerning the fact that the girl has lost her mom. 8(
As I said, I made my internship in the HR group and we've always been nice to the people
No seriously, according to our understanding we were service providers. And our customers were the employees. Our goal was to satisfy them, whatever their request and concern was.
Maybe there are national differences in the attitudes of personnel departments? In the UK and the US the attitude might differ from the one I experienced here.
I glad to hear that you're HR group has compassion Ray P. Where I work they could care less. If it's not in the "Binder" then don't bother. Where I work it's like what Art say's.
