One plot point that has always confused me

I'm pretty sure Walter's daughter must have asked them to take in the mail. Now why queenie wasn't taken care of I have no idea.

That's right Ray P. Why steal a toupee?

I also thought some time back of the possibility that the daughter could have asked the Klopeks.
But.
Put yourself in her position. Her dad rushed into hospital with a suspected heart attack, the last thing you'd do in a rain storm in the early hours is worry about the next day's mail being delivered.

No no, the Klopeks are up all night. They saw Walter leave the house. The Klopeks broke in (don't know how yet) then Queenie got out, the Klopeks had a quick rummage round, took indiscriminate items of Walters. Heck, even Art wanted his lighter!

To the original point, I still can't figure out why Art would make up a story about talking to the real estate broad. What purpose would that serve??

I totally agree. But the question remains,WHY did they break into Walters house. I think Walter WAS the Klopeks next target. Werner wanted the best house on the block to better represent his "well respected pathologist" image,so they broke in to map out Walters house and plan their takeover. Why they stole Walters wig is still a mystery.

Sorry Art, Bonnie and RP, I disagree with this one. There had to be a real estate broad to tell Art about the Klopeks old house burning down in a hideous, raging inferno.
NF told me a theory that is plausible. The Klopeks hired a actress to pretend to be a real estate broad, you know, to keep the neighbors from becoming suspicious. They would have done this after murdering the Knapps and taking their house.

That's possible. They planned to kill Walter and were already figuring out how to get into the house and Walter's bedroom without making too much noise and awaking too much attention. Qucikly get in, kill Walter, get out with the corpse.

On the other hand, if they were making such considerations, why stealing newspapers and a toupee? Still, don't forget, the toupee must have been stolen later because Bonnie was screaming when they discovered it in Walter's house. So the Klopeks could not have stolen it the night Walter disappeared but later on. Furthermore, didn't Ray take the toupee with him but later put it into Walter's mailbox?

The Klopeks didn't steal Walter's toupee, it was in the mail after Ray dropped it through the mail slot. The Klopeks were getting the mail. Its the only thing that makes sense.

It makes no sense at all that Walter's mail would be picked up by the Klopeks. None. They are the last one's he'd have asked. Ipso facto.

And, I might add, the purpose it would serve for Art to fabricate the story of a female real estate agent telling Art that the Klopek's last house burnt to the ground is all part of 'grooming' Ray psychologically. Check out Art's eyes when Ray says "It's my neighbour" - he's taking Art's bait. It's all a game to Art. Like the night they talked about Skip. All instilling fear in Ray. It's Art's plan; to get Ray to start getting paranoid and to spy with Art and Mark.

As if a real estate agent would pass on confidential and private information to some nosey neighbour about a prospective client's last house!? And why would the Klopek's even tell her that? It would create unnecessary questions.

Re: Hiring an actress. Hmmm. Nobody even noticed a moving van out front, let alone a real estate agent. Art made it all up to instil and propagate a conspiracy theory for Ray to take hold. When Art is in 'the den' and Ray shows Art and Mark the toupee saying he got it from the Klopeks (i.e. they must've gone back to Walter's to get the hair) Art seems genuinely shocked - all of a sudden his little fantasy game has become real.

This does make sense and seems to be right, however, there's still one unclear factor that doesn't allow me to agree. I've stretched my brain sideways and still cant think of a plausible answer..
If there's no real estate broad, how did art know about the Klopeks last house burning down?
