One plot point that has always confused me

Maybe he didn't know. It was an invented story to add a little adventure and mystery to those weird neighbours and to instigate Ray to start spying around. Later on, the made-up story began to turn real. Coincidence.

I GOT IT! I have devised the most plausible theory that proves there was A real estate broad..
Werner DIDN'T make the offer to buy the Knapps house in person. He sent the real estate broad to make the offer for him. That's when Art talked to her. Also Werner would have instructed her to reveal that thier old house burnt down in a attempt to gain the Knapps sympathy.

I still agree that Art enhanced the story to get Ray paranoid, so he would go snooping around with him and Rummy.

I also think Werner just simply forgot about the skulls being in the trunk when he went to get the coppers..He did look a little surprised when they found them.

*crunch* maybe.....HAHA, I beat you to it Art.

Interesting theories (*flipping through demonology book*).

Still we're missing explanations for the "taking care of the mail" part, aren't we?

A bit halfcocked though ;)

Maybe the Klopeks just told the cops that they were taking in Walter's mail to refute Ray, Art, and Rumsfields story. Maybe they lied to the cops and Walter, just getting home from the hospital, wasn't available to call bs on their claim.

The Klopeks lie. The poeple are clearly psycho. They're murdering people and burrying them in the back yard. They will tell the coppers anything to not get caught.

All interesting points gentlemen.
KMan. Genius idea that the real estate broad was an emissary for the Klopeks, that Art spoke to.

I've always believed it was Art BS'ing, but like HCT says, how else would he know the Klopek's name?

But no-one noticed a moving van. That's ridiculous on a street like Mayfield Place! Jeez, a dog having a dump at dawn is noticed. You'd think the Klopek's moving van would be spotted!

Hmmm.

Okay. Step by step now.

1. The real estate woman visits the Knapps and makes an offer on behalf of Werner.

2. She tries to gain sympathy with the Knapps by stating they were desperate to find somewhere quick as their house had burned down.

3. The Knapps reject the offer, as they're so attached to the house.

4. Art, being nosey, goes over and speaks to the real estate woman.

5. He finds out the 'Klopeks' want the house.

continue.....

6. Art takes it for granted that the sale is made, not knowing the Knapps said no.

7. Later on at the Klopeks "nice neighborly chat", Reuben lies about a moving van. Nobody noticed a moving van because there never was one.

I believe your theory is correct. When walter was leaving for the hospital, Werner rushed over to offer assistance. With ulterior motives of course.

Werner: Is there anything I can do to help?
Walters daughter: Could you bring in dads mail for me?
Werner: Of course. I'll hold it untill he gets back.

I think the Barkalows are involved somehow. I'm still working on my halfc0cked theory though.
